About the Port
Bastia, Corsica's principal port, opens onto a townscape of shuttered 18th-century buildings, narrow lanes, and a harbor still shaped by centuries of Genoese and French rule. The old town spreads around Place du Marché, where a morning market unfolds beneath the 16th-century Saint-Jean-Baptiste church, while across the harbor a 14th-century Genoese fortress gives the city its name and now houses a museum tracing Bastia's history from Roman times.
As one of the busiest ports in the Mediterranean, Bastia retains an unpolished, lived-in character rather than a purely tourist-facing one, offering a genuine sense of Corsican daily life. The historic quarters lie within an easy walk of the pier, making it simple to wander the old harbor and citadel on foot. The city also serves as a convenient starting point for exploring the rugged coastline of Cap Corse beyond its edges.
