Cozumel, Mexico

A laid-back Caribbean island where turquoise reef waters meet an easygoing Mexican port town

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Cozumel sits just off the Yucatán Peninsula, its clear, warm waters part of the Mesoamerican Reef system that draws divers and snorkelers from around the world. San Miguel, the island's main town, spreads out near the pier with shops, seafood restaurants, and a waterfront malecón inviting an easy stroll. Beach clubs line the coast, offering calm swimming spots and casual dining within a short taxi ride of the port.

Beyond the shoreline, the island's interior holds Mayan ruins at San Gervasio, a quieter counterpoint to the lively waterfront. Many visitors also use Cozumel as a jumping-off point for excursions to Tulum or Playa del Carmen on the mainland, reachable by ferry. The island's flat terrain and reliable trade winds make it a comfortable base for a day of swimming, sailing, or simply wandering the plaza in San Miguel.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Cozumel.

Snorkel Palancar Reef

One of the island's most vivid coral gardens sits a short boat ride from shore, with visibility often exceeding 100 feet. Book a reef trip through a beach club or local outfitter for a couple of hours in the water.

Explore San Gervasio Ruins

This Mayan ceremonial site, once dedicated to the goddess Ixchel, offers shaded jungle paths and modest but genuine ancient structures. Taxis from the pier take about 30 minutes; plan on an hour to explore.

Drift Dive Santa Rosa Wall

A dramatic drop-off with swim-throughs and swaying sponges makes this a favorite for certified divers seeking strong current dives. Arrange in advance through a dive shop near the pier, since spots fill quickly.
