Florencepisa (Livorno)

The Tuscan coast's gateway port opens the way to Florence's Renaissance treasures and Pisa's iconic tower

About the Port

Livorno sits on Italy's western Tuscan coast, a working port city whose modern harbor belies its role as gateway to some of the region's most celebrated destinations. From here, travelers reach Florence's Renaissance art and architecture and Pisa's famous Leaning Tower with relative ease, while the surrounding countryside offers rolling vineyards and hill towns such as Lucca. Livorno itself rewards a closer look, with the Venezia Nuova quarter's canals, built during the Medici era, lined by colorful facades.

The old town and waterfront promenade lie within walking distance of the pier, making a relaxed stroll along the canals an easy option before or after venturing farther afield. Seafood defines the local table, most notably cacciucco, a Livornese fish stew shaped by the city's centuries-old ties to the sea. Between its coastal charm and its access to Tuscany's storied cities, Livorno serves as a fitting introduction to the region's layered history and flavor.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Florencepisa .

See the Leaning Tower of Pisa

The marble bell tower's dramatic tilt anchors the Piazza dei Miracoli alongside the cathedral and baptistery; Pisa is roughly an hour from the pier by train or organized transfer, so plan ahead for the round trip.

Explore Renaissance Florence

Home to the Duomo, Uffizi Gallery, and Ponte Vecchio, Florence rewards even a few hours of wandering its museums and piazzas; expect about a 90-minute journey each way from Livorno, so book transport or a guided excursion in advance.

Wander Medieval Lucca

Encircled by intact Renaissance walls now topped with a tree-lined walking path, this compact walled town offers a slower, atmospheric alternative to the bigger cities, easily reached on a shorter transfer from the port.
