Hue / Danang (Chan May), Vietnam

Gateway to Vietnam's last imperial capital, where citadels, royal tombs, and riverside pagodas recall centuries of court life

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Chan May serves as the coastal port for both Hue and Da Nang, offering travelers a choice between imperial history and a modern beach city. Hue, the former seat of Vietnam's Nguyen emperors, holds a UNESCO-listed Imperial City enclosed by moated walls, along with the tranquil Thien Mu Pagoda on the Perfume River and the ornate tombs of past rulers set among pine-covered hills. The city's blend of Confucian court tradition and Buddhist heritage makes it one of the country's most historically layered destinations.

Da Nang, closer to the pier, offers sweeping beaches, the Marble Mountains, and easy access to the old trading town of Hoi An. Chan May itself is a working pier rather than a town, so onward travel by road is necessary to reach either city's landmarks, a drive of roughly one to two hours each way.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Hue / Danang .

Explore the Imperial City

Wander the moated citadel that once housed the Nguyen emperors, with its gates, courtyards, and restored palace halls. Allow at least an hour or two; it's about a two-hour drive from the pier.

Cruise to Thien Mu Pagoda

Visit Hue's iconic seven-story pagoda perched above the Perfume River, a peaceful working monastery and one of Vietnam's most photographed religious sites.

Wander Old Town Hoi An

Stroll the lantern-lined streets and riverside shophouses of this UNESCO trading port, closer to Chan May than Hue and easily paired with a Marble Mountains stop en route.
