Juneau, Alaska

Alaska's capital rises between fjord and icefield, where glaciers, wildlife, and wilderness adventure meet a walkable frontier town

About the Port

Juneau sits on the Gastineau Channel at the base of steep peaks rising 3,500 to 4,000 feet, with no road connection to the outside world—access is only by air or sea. Behind the city spreads the vast Juneau Icefield, source of some thirty glaciers, two of which, Mendenhall and Lemon Creek, can be seen from local roads. The compact downtown, with its historic storefronts and easy waterfront access, sits within walking distance of the pier.

Beyond the shops, the surrounding wilderness invites hiking, kayaking, and wildlife viewing, with whales frequently spotted in nearby waters and floatplanes offering aerial views of the icefield. Long daylight hours in summer extend the range of outdoor pursuits, while the blend of small-town charm and dramatic alpine scenery gives Juneau a character distinct among Alaska's coastal communities. Its setting, framed by mountains and glacial ice, remains the defining feature of any visit.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Juneau.

Visit Mendenhall Glacier

A short drive from the pier (about 20-30 minutes, shuttles and taxis available), this receding tidewater-turned-lake glacier offers viewing platforms, trails, and often black bears near Nugget Falls.

Ride the Mount Roberts Tramway

Steps from the dock, an aerial tram climbs nearly 1,800 feet in minutes to alpine trails, a nature center, and sweeping views over the Gastineau Channel.

Take a Whale-Watching Excursion

Boats depart regularly from Juneau's harbor for the nearby waters of Stephens Passage and Favorite Channel, prime feeding grounds for humpback whales; book ahead as spots fill quickly.
