Lisbon

Lisbon layers seven hillside quarters, riverside grandeur, and centuries of maritime history into one endlessly walkable capital

About the Port

Set along the wide Rio Tejo, Lisbon rewards wandering with its patchwork of styles and eras. Vintage funiculars and famous yellow trams climb the city's seven hills, linking cobbled alleys and tiled facades to grand miradouros with river views. The Belém district holds two UNESCO World Heritage landmarks, the fortified Tower of Belém and the Jerónimos Monastery, both testaments to Portugal's age of maritime discovery.

Elsewhere, the Baixa district's orderly grid reflects the Pombaline rebuilding that followed the 1755 earthquake, while the Alfama's tangled lanes retain an older, pre-quake character. Outdoor cafés and fado houses add to the atmosphere after dark. Many cruise berths sit within a short distance of the historic center, making it possible to reach the old town, riverside promenades, and central squares on foot.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Lisbon.

Explore Belém's Monuments

Walk between the Tower of Belém and Jerónimos Monastery, Portugal's grandest tributes to the age of exploration; both sit a short taxi or tram ride from the center and reward an hour or two each.

Ride Tram 28

Board the iconic yellow tram as it rattles through Alfama and Graça's narrow, hilly lanes, a compact way to see multiple viewpoints and neighborhoods without a car.

Climb to a Miradouro

Head up to one of the city's hilltop lookouts, such as Santa Luzia or Graça, for sweeping views over red rooftops and the Rio Tejo, best reached via funicular or a steady uphill walk.
