Orkney Islands (Kirkwall), Scotland

Ancient stone monuments and Norse-era streets meet windswept archipelago scenery in one of Scotland's most storied outposts

About the Port

Kirkwall, capital of the Orkney Islands, sits on Mainland island amid an archipelago that belonged to Norway until 1468, when it passed to Scotland as loan collateral. The compact old town, walkable from the pier, centers on St. Magnus Cathedral, built of distinctive red sandstone, with the ruined Earl's Palace close by. Cobbled lanes and centuries-old buildings reflect the islands' long Norse-influenced past.

Beyond town, the archipelago holds some of Europe's oldest standing structures, including the Neolithic village of Skara Brae and the stone circle at the Ring of Brodgar, both predating the pyramids. Nearby Scapa Flow, once a major naval anchorage, is remembered for the scuttling of the German fleet in 1919. Peat-influenced whisky from a local distillery adds another layer to a landscape defined by history, sea, and sky.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Orkney Islands .

Explore Skara Brae

Wander this remarkably preserved Neolithic village, older than Stonehenge and the pyramids, with stone furniture still intact in its ancient houses. About a 45-minute drive from the pier, so plan half a day for the trip and its visitor center.

Stand Among the Ring of Brodgar

Circle this UNESCO-listed stone monument dating to 2700 B.C., set dramatically between two lochs. Combine it with nearby Standing Stones of Stenness for a fuller sense of Orkney's prehistoric landscape.

Sample Peat-Smoked Whisky

Tour Kirkwall's Highland Park distillery, one of the world's northernmost, to see traditional floor malting and taste single malts shaped by Orkney peat. A short taxi ride from town, with tastings capping most tours.
