About the Port
Portsmouth sits on Prince Rupert Bay along Dominica's northwest coast, the island's second-largest town and a gateway to some of the Caribbean's most unspoiled scenery. Steep, forested hills rise behind the waterfront, while Cabrits National Park occupies the peninsula just north of town, home to the restored ruins of Fort Shirley, an 18th-century British garrison overlooking the bay. Boat excursions up the nearby Indian River wind beneath buttressed trees and mangrove roots into quiet freshwater wetlands.
Called the Nature Isle for its dense rainforest, volcanic peaks, and abundance of rivers and waterfalls, Dominica has built little large-scale development along this stretch of coast, leaving the landscape largely as it has long been. Ships typically anchor in Prince Rupert Bay, with tenders ferrying travelers to shore near the town center. From there, the island's interior—hiking trails, hot springs, and small farming villages—lies within easy reach for those seeking a quieter, more natural side of the Caribbean.

How our planners would spend a day in Portsmouth.
Explore Fort Shirley at Cabrits
Wander the restored 18th-century British garrison atop Cabrits National Park, with cannon batteries and sweeping views over Prince Rupert Bay. Reachable by a short taxi ride or scenic walk from the tender dock, plus a network of trails through dry forest.
Take an Indian River Boat Tour
Glide by rowboat beneath towering buttressed trees and mangrove tunnels into hushed freshwater wetlands, a setting so atmospheric it inspired scenes in a major film franchise. Local guides depart right from Portsmouth's waterfront; book ahead as spots fill quickly.
Visit Emerald Pool's Waterfall
Head into Dominica's lush interior to this rainforest pool fed by a cascading waterfall, reached via a short, well-marked trail through dense jungle. Roughly an hour's drive from Portsmouth, it's a refreshing dip that captures the island's wild, untamed core.
