About the Port
Punta Moreno sits on the western coast of Isabela Island, the largest of the Galápagos archipelago, where a mid-twentieth-century uplift event raised the shoreline and left a broad field of solidified lava exposed to the sky. Visitors arrive by wet landing directly onto the rocky terrain, with no pier or dock in place, and set out on foot across the dark, undulating flows shaped by past volcanic activity.
Scattered across the barren rock, a series of brackish pools forms unlikely oases, drawing wading birds, flamingos, and other wildlife that gather where fresh groundwater meets trapped seawater. The trail is uneven and sun-exposed, rewarding those who come prepared with sturdy shoes and a slower pace. Beyond the immediate landscape, views extend toward Isabela's volcanic peaks, offering a quiet, elemental counterpoint to the archipelago's better-known beaches and bays.
