About the Port
Set along the Douro River at the western edge of the Port wine region, Régua has served as a trading and transport hub since the 18th century, when barrels of wine were shipped downriver toward Porto. The town's riverside quays and sloping streets sit beneath the Serra do Marão mountains, and the surrounding hillsides are layered with terraced vineyards and small stone farmhouses that define the valley's landscape.
Most river vessels dock within easy reach of the town center, making it simple to explore on foot or join excursions into the wider region. Nearby, the Baroque hill town of Lamego draws visitors for its hilltop shrine and long stone staircase, while river cruises through the surrounding valley reveal some of Portugal's most celebrated wine country scenery.
