Sakata, Japan

A historic Sea of Japan rice port framed by the slopes of Mount Chokai and the Mogami River delta

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Sakata sits on Japan's northern Sea of Japan coast, where the Mogami River meets open water beneath the distant silhouette of Mount Chokai. For centuries the town prospered as a shipping point for rice grown across the Shonai Plain, and that legacy survives in rows of wooden storehouses once used to keep grain cool and dry. Quiet canals, a small fishing harbor, and a compact grid of streets give the town an unhurried, workaday charm rarely found in larger Japanese ports.

Within easy reach of the pier, travelers can wander the old merchant quarter, visit museums devoted to local history and photography, and climb to a hillside park with harbor views. Sakata makes a practical, low-key gateway to the rural landscapes and mountains of Yamagata Prefecture beyond the coast.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Sakata.

Tour the Sankyo Rice Storehouses

Row upon row of black-tiled, zelkova-shaded warehouses built in 1893 still store rice today, with one wing housing a small museum and local craft shops. About a 10-minute walk or short taxi ride from the pier.

Visit the Honma Museum and Garden

Former retreat of Japan's largest historical landowning family, pairing a formal strolling garden with a collection of paintings and antiques inside a preserved villa. Allow about an hour to see both the house and grounds.

Climb Hiyoriyama Park

A short uphill walk from the old town leads to pine-shaded lawns, a restored wooden lighthouse, and open views over the harbor and Sea of Japan. A quiet spot to catch the town's layout before heading back to the ship.
