About the Port
Salamanca rises inland from the Douro River valley, reached by road from river landings such as Vega de Terrón. Its honey-colored sandstone has earned the city a reputation as one of Spain's finest examples of Plateresque and Baroque architecture, anchored by a university founded in the early 13th century, among the oldest in Europe. The Plaza Mayor, a grand 18th-century square, remains the social heart of the city, while twin cathedrals, one Romanesque and one Gothic, stand side by side near the old town.
Visitors typically arrive on a full-day excursion, since the city sits well inland from the river landing rather than directly on the water. The compact historic center rewards walking, with narrow lanes linking the university quarter, the cathedrals, and the Roman bridge spanning the Tormes River, making Salamanca a rewarding, if longer, detour from a Douro river itinerary.
