About the Port
Reached by a scenic overland journey from the coastal port of Puerto Caldera, Santa Elena serves as the gateway to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve, established in 1972 and counted among the most celebrated wildlife reserves in the world. Elevated ridges wrapped in perpetual mist shelter an extraordinary range of orchids, ferns, and epiphytes, while suspended walkways and quiet trails offer close encounters with hummingbirds, resplendent quetzals, and countless other species found nowhere else in such concentration.
