About the Port
Set on a broad bay along the St. Lawrence River's north shore, Sept-Îles takes its name from the cluster of islands sheltering its harbor. Long inhabited by the Innu, the area later grew into a hub for fur trading, fishing, and eventually one of Canada's busiest iron ore shipping ports, a legacy still visible in its industrial waterfront and rail lines running north to the mining town of Labrador City.
The compact downtown, within walking distance of the pier, offers a small museum on regional and Innu history, a marina promenade, and views across to the uninhabited islands that give the city its name. Beyond town, travelers can explore boreal forest, salmon rivers, and coastal landscapes that define Quebec's remote Côte-Nord region, making Sept-Îles a quiet but authentic introduction to life along the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
