Seydisfjordur, Iceland

A fjord-side village of colorful timber houses and cascading waterfalls, tucked eleven miles deep in East Iceland's dramatic landscape

About the Port

Seyðisfjörður sits at the innermost point of its namesake fjord, reached by an eleven-mile passage between steep, waterfall-streaked mountains. Home to roughly 700 residents, the village is known for its cluster of brightly painted wooden buildings dating to the era of early trade settlement, many now housing galleries, cafés, and small shops within easy walking distance of the pier. The Fjarðará river tumbles down from the valley above, forming a series of waterfalls visible even from the town center.

Beyond the village, the Skalanes Nature Reserve draws birders and hikers with coastal cliffs and more than 45 recorded species, while trails into the surrounding hills offer sweeping views back over the fjord. The compact scale of the town makes it easy to explore on foot, pairing dramatic natural scenery with a quiet, well-preserved slice of Icelandic maritime history.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Seydisfjordur.

Walk the Rainbow Street

Follow the painted pavement from the harbor past art‑filled wooden houses to the town's sky‑blue church, the village's most photographed corner and an easy five-minute stroll from the pier.

Hike to Skálanes Nature Reserve

A coastal reserve about 5 miles from town with cliffside trails, seabird colonies, and Arctic fox sightings; plan two to three hours round trip and sturdy footwear for the gravel road and trail.

Trace the Fjarðará Waterfalls

Follow the river path uphill from the village center to reach cascading falls visible from town, gaining sweeping views back over the fjord in under an hour.
