Sitka, Alaska

A layered Alaskan port where Tlingit heritage, Russian America, and rugged coastal wilderness meet on one hillside harbor

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Sitka rises gently up a forested hillside above a harbor scattered with small islands, its skyline marked by the copper dome of St. Michael's Cathedral. Once the capital of Russian America and long before that a homeland of the Tlingit people, the town preserves this layered past through the Russian Bishop's House, the Pioneer Home, and a cluster of buildings recognized on the National Register of Historic Places.

Museums and totem-lined paths trace the community's transformation from fur-trading outpost to American territory, while the surrounding waters and forests remain rich with wildlife. The historic core sits within easy walking distance of the pier, making it simple to explore on foot before venturing farther into the surrounding coastal scenery.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Sitka.

Walk Sitka National Historical Park

Follow the forested totem trail along the water, lined with restored Tlingit and Haida poles, near the site of the 1804 Battle of Sitka. It's about a 15-minute walk from the pier and takes an hour or so to explore.

Tour the Russian Bishop's House

One of the few surviving examples of Russian colonial architecture in North America, this 1842 log structure offers a close look at Sitka's fur-trade-era past, just steps from the harbor.

Watch a Raptor Rehabilitation Center Flight

See eagles, owls, and hawks recovering from injury at the Alaska Raptor Center, a short walk or shuttle ride from downtown, for an up-close encounter with the region's iconic wildlife.
