About the Port
Sullivan Bay sits on the northeastern shore of Santiago Island in the Galápagos archipelago, where a vast field of pahoehoe lava spreads toward the coast in dark, ropy swirls. The flow, among the youngest and best preserved in the islands, offers a rare close-up look at how volcanic activity shapes this remote corner of the Pacific. Sparse pioneer plants and small lava lizards are among the few signs of life on the otherwise stark black rock.
Landings here are by panga, wading directly onto a beach before a walking path leads across the solidified flow and its tuff formations. The terrain is uneven and sun-exposed, so sturdy shoes and water are worth carrying. Beyond the geology, the surrounding waters and nearby islets shelter marine iguanas, seabirds, and occasional sea lions, rounding out a stop centered on the Galápagos's volcanic origins rather than its wildlife alone.
