About the Port
Tain-l'Hermitage sits along the Rhône River in the northern reaches of the valley, its name inseparable from the steep, sun-baked slopes that rise just behind the town. These terraced hillsides produce the Hermitage appellation, among the most respected expressions of Syrah in France, and vineyard rows are visible from the riverbank promenade. The town itself is compact and easily explored on foot from the pier, with cellars and tasting rooms within easy reach.
Across the river, the medieval town of Tournon-sur-Rhône makes an easy companion visit, linked by a footbridge. Its hilltop castle traces its origins to the 10th century, later expanded with additional fortifications, and now overlooks the rooftops and river below. Together the two towns offer a walkable, unhurried introduction to Rhône Valley wine country and its layered history.
