Cruise Port Guide

Talbot Bay, Western Australia, Australia

A remote Kimberley wilderness where immense tides squeeze the sea through narrow sandstone gorges, creating nature's own horizontal waterfalls

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Tucked within the Buccaneer Archipelago along Western Australia's rugged Kimberley coast, Talbot Bay is famed for its so-called horizontal falls, where extreme tidal surges force seawater through two narrow rock gorges, creating a churning, temporary cascade unlike any other on earth. The surrounding landscape is a maze of ancient red sandstone ranges, mangrove-lined inlets, and turquoise water, largely untouched and accessible only by sea or air.

There is no town or settlement here, and vessels anchor offshore, with smaller boats used to explore the bay's gorges and observe the tidal phenomenon up close. Wildlife sightings, including reef sharks and seabirds, are common in these waters. The setting offers a rare glimpse of the Kimberley's raw, elemental beauty, best appreciated on a calm-water excursion timed to the tides.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Talbot Bay.

Fast-Boat Through the Horizontal Falls

Board a small tender timed to the tide surge and thread the narrow gorges as seawater churns through at speed—an exhilarating, only-here few minutes best booked as soon as it's offered.

Scenic Flight Over the Buccaneer Archipelago

A helicopter or seaplane hop reveals the falls, red sandstone ranges, and maze of islands from above, putting the tidal phenomenon's scale into full perspective in around 20-30 minutes.

Scan the Shallows for Reef Sharks

Linger at the boat's rail or along the bay's edges to spot reef sharks, rays, and seabirds cruising the clear, mangrove-fringed water—wildlife encounters typical of this remote Kimberley inlet.
