Taranto

An ancient port between two seas where Greek ruins and Aragonese ramparts meet the rhythms of Puglia

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Set on a peninsula between the Mar Grande and the Mar Piccolo, Taranto has drawn seafarers since it was founded as a Greek colony, and traces of that era survive alongside centuries of later rule. The old town's narrow lanes lead past the Aragonese Castle, built to guard the strait between the two waters, and the Cathedral of San Cataldo, one of the oldest in the region, with roots reaching back to the 11th century.

Beyond the historic core, Taranto serves as a gateway to Puglia's countryside of olive groves, whitewashed towns, and Adriatic and Ionian coastline. The historic district sits within walking distance of the pier, making it easy to explore the castle, cathedral, and waterfront on foot before venturing farther into the surrounding region.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Taranto.

Explore the MArTA Museum

One of Italy's finest archaeological collections holds Greek gold jewelry and artifacts unearthed across Taranto, tracing the city's roots as Magna Graecia's largest colony. It's a short walk from the old town, worth an hour or two.

Day Trip to Alberobello

Puglia's whitewashed trulli houses cluster in this UNESCO village about an hour inland, offering a striking contrast to Taranto's maritime scenery. Arrange transport ahead, as taxis and organized tours are the easiest way there.

Stroll the Lungomare Waterfront

The palm-lined promenade along the Mar Grande offers views of the naval fleet and fishing boats, plus a relaxed spot for espresso or fresh seafood between historic sites.
