About the Port
Willis Island sits far out in the Coral Sea, at the eastern edge of a scattered territory of islets, cays, and reefs beyond the Great Barrier Reef. It is the only permanently inhabited outpost in this group, home to a small team staffing a weather station established in 1921 to give early warning of approaching cyclones. Low, sandy, and largely untouched, the island has no town, harbor, or visitor facilities.
For those aboard passing ships, Willis Island is less a destination to step ashore than a striking sight from the deck: a slender ribbon of coral and scrub surrounded by open ocean, with seabirds wheeling above the weather station's antennas. Its remoteness and role in tracking Pacific storms give the island a quiet significance disproportionate to its tiny size, offering a rare glimpse of one of Australia's most isolated inhabited points.
