Wrangell

One of Alaska's oldest towns, where ancient totems and petroglyphs meet the wild Stikine River delta

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Set near the mouth of the Stikine River, Wrangell is among the oldest settlements in Alaska, its long history reflected in a notable collection of totem poles found throughout town. Petroglyph Beach State Historic Park preserves rock carvings left by earlier inhabitants, offering a direct link to the region's deep past. The town sits within a broad bay framed by a long valley and coastal mountains, giving arriving visitors a striking first view of the landscape.

North of town, the Stikine River spreads into a wide delta of braided channels, drawing salmon runs and the wildlife that follow them, including eagles, seals, and black bears, often visible from designated observation points. Nearby, the Anan Wildlife Observatory and the Tongass National Forest extend the region's reputation for abundant nature. Wrangell's historic core lies within walking distance of the pier, making it easy to explore the totems and waterfront on foot.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Wrangell.

Explore Petroglyph Beach

A short walk north of the pier leads to ancient rock carvings scattered along the shoreline, some thought to be over 8,000 years old. Boardwalk viewing platforms protect the fragile petroglyphs while offering close-up access.

Spot Wildlife at the Stikine Delta

Head to the braided channels north of town where salmon runs draw eagles, seals, and black bears into view from designated observation points. Best reached by a short excursion, this is one of the easiest wildlife-viewing stops in Southeast Alaska.

Wander the Totem-Lined Streets

Wrangell's historic core, walkable straight from the dock, holds one of Alaska's richest collections of totem poles alongside small museums detailing the town's Tlingit and pioneer past.
