Zadar

Ancient Roman ruins meet the haunting music of the sea on Zadar's compact, walkable peninsula

About the Port

Zadar's Old Town occupies a small peninsula on Croatia's Dalmatian Coast, its marble streets tracing centuries of Roman and Byzantine history. The Roman Forum, built between the first century BC and third century AD, anchors the old center near the circular St. Donatus Church, a ninth-century landmark that has become the city's defining symbol. Museums along the peninsula hold Byzantine-era artworks and other treasures reflecting Zadar's long life as an Adriatic crossroads.

At the water's edge, the Sea Organ turns waves and tide into a low, shifting hum, drawing visitors to sit along the stone steps and listen. The Old Town's compact layout keeps its major sights within easy walking distance of the harbor, making it simple to move between ruins, churches, and waterfront views in a single unhurried visit. Modern cafés and shops fill in the spaces between antiquities, giving the peninsula a lived-in, layered character.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Zadar.

See the Greeting to the Sun

A circular solar-powered light installation beside the Sea Organ that pulses in color after dark, best reached by the same short waterfront walk from the Old Town's tip.

Wander Kalelarga

Zadar's main pedestrian artery cuts through the peninsula past shops, cafés, and side alleys leading to Roman remains, offering an easy way to feel the city's everyday rhythm between monuments.

Visit the Museum of Ancient Glass

A short walk from the harbor, this collection of Roman-era glassware includes rare intact pieces recovered from local shipwrecks and burial sites, a quieter counterpoint to the peninsula's open-air ruins.
