About the Port
Known to Polynesians as the Sacred Island, Raiatea was once the religious and cultural center of the Society Islands. Its most significant site, Taputapuatea marae on the southeast coast, served as a gathering place for chiefs and priests across the Pacific and remains one of the region's most important historical landmarks. The island shares a single barrier reef and lagoon with neighboring Tahaa, a pairing local legend attributes to a conger eel that once split the two apart.
